Discovering Florence Through Photography

Course Description: Students will explore the history and craft of photography using the beautiful and historic backdrop of Florence and Tuscany as inspiration. The course will examine such topics as urban and rural landscape, portraiture and digital techniques and is structured to take full advantage of the experience of being in Florence. Class time will include visits to museums and galleries, field trips, technical demonstrations, darkroom work, individual and group critiques. This course is open to students with all levels of photo experience. Beginners will master the basics of camera usage, film development, and black and white printing. More advanced students will be encouraged to expand their personal photographic vision and skills. The digital component of the class will be explored on an individual basis according to the interest and previous experience of the student.
Prerequisites: None. This course is open to students of all levels.
Instructor:
Susanna Lucia Lamaina, BFA, MA is a Fine Art Photographer whose
work has been published in numerous catalogs and is held in private collections,
graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco State
University. She studied and collaborated with noted Farm Security Administration
photographer, John Collier, Jr.
A respected educator, Susanna was awarded "Teaching in Excellence"
from the University of California, Santa Cruz extension program for her
dedication to teaching.
Her fine art portraiture work has led her to photograph the Italian film
director, artist, actor and screenwriter, Mimmo Calopresti. A photograph
from the series of Mimmo Calopresti made in 2003 was published in the
2004 61st International Venice Film Festival catalog. She continues to
photograph Mimmo Calopresti on a regular basis.
Susanna's classes overlap many artistic disciplines, offering a unique
diverse structure to studying photography. She has been teaching international
students for 20 years. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally.
